Senior Engineer

Purpose Investments is a high growth investment management company with over $4 billion in assets. We are looking for someone to join our team in the critical role of owning Purpose’s web assets, developing new web properties, and applying new web technology. As a member of the Purpose team, you will also assist the business in marketing new products online and other business opportunities.
Purpose’s Technology team develops innovative, robust and scalable technologies that change how investments work. Our products need to solve for hard businesses problems encompassing regulation, security, financial, marketing and technology issues. We are looking for an entrepreneurial Senior Engineer to help innovate and execute product initiatives. You will have a great influence in the creation of our development process and technology stack that will help us achieve our business goals.
– Scope, design, code, test, refactor, maintain and improve software.
– Manage individual & team project priorities, deadlines, milestones and deliverables.
– Full-stack web/mobile development with a variety of languages.
– You will work on specific project with opportunities to switch projects as the business grow and evolve
– Collaborate and work closely with graphic designers and other developers to implement innovative and user-friendly front-end solutions in the ever-changing web development landscape.
– Help to define user experience, product vision and strategy.
Minimum qualifications:
– BS degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or similar field of study or equivalent working and proven experience
– Experience with relational databases and SQL, preferably MySQL.
– 7+ years experience working with any of the following combination: Unix/Linux environments, web application development, machine learning, networking, api development, distributed and parallel systems, blockchain, and/or cybersecurity.
– Experience in working with TDD, git, Continuous Integration, basic IT security, database design.
– Excellent verbal and written English.
Preferred qualifications:
– Master’s, PhD degree, further education in C.S., engineering, Mathematics, Physics or any other technical field.
– Experience with PHP, Python and/or Ruby a plus.

Purpose is looking for a motivated Communications Specialist to help us generate terrific content for Purpose Investments, a leader in the asset management space in Canada. The ideal candidate will be innovative, creative, and have knowledge of digital publishing, social media, blogging, investing news, business news, newswires and/or magazines. Experience in the financial services industry important, as is deep knowledge and interest in investing. Being a team player and seeing the big picture are critical to being successful at Purpose, as is a strong work ethic and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and help out in other areas.


What you’ll do:

  • Stay abreast of what’s happening in the finance industry, with financial advisors, ETFs, mutual funds, and investment strategies
  • Help to write and curate articles, blogs, captions, presentations and other online content
  • Manage and further develop a network of media outlets
  • Identify news, information and stories that are ahead of the curve and inform Purpose team and audience through pitching and thoughtful content strategies.
  • Analyze patterns of engagement from Purpose clients using tools like Google Analytics and social media audience engagement tools, and use them to drive engagement

Who you are:

  • 5+ years of experience writing and/or editing in an entrepreneurial/breaking news environment.
  • 3+ years of experience in financial services industry
  • You have a proven ability to conceive story ideas that run ahead of the news and generate wide interest or ‘buzz’ among a business and financial audience, including stories on or relating to investing, major corporations, famous investors, regulation or financial advisory practice management

We are looking for an individual who can thrive in a start-up like, fast-paced, high-intensity work environment. If you are highly organized with great attention to detail and are looking for a hybrid role of Law Clerk / Compliance Analyst offering exposure to both the legal and compliance aspects of a high growth asset management organization then please read on.

This position will provide an opportunity to understand how compliance programs and legal matters are managed in asset management firms and will specifically provide the incumbent with:

  • Knowledge of the financial industry regulatory environment
  • An understanding of the conflicts of interest that exist when managing investments on behalf of client money and how the conflicts are mitigated and managed
  • An understanding of how an oversight function performs testing routines to validate adherence and effectiveness of the control environment
  • Exposure to managing multiple assignments with competing priorities
  • The ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Exposure to systems application and software skills, including Excel, and Bloomberg.
  • Exposure to all levels of management including the Executive Management Team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare and file documents on the System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval;
  • Conduct searches of public company information, including public securities documents, decisions and orders, and applications for exemptive relief through SEDAR and other means;
  • Prepare and file documents with the Toronto Stock Exchange and Aequitas NEO Exchange;
  • Assist with preparing filings via the National Registration Database (“NRD”), which include applications for registration and notices for maintaining NRD records;

  • Review Access Persons’ personal trading and escalate potential exceptions;

A minimum of five years of experience in web design or development is required, with emphasis on front-end development. Familiarity with the financial or investment industry is a plus, but not critical.

Product Manager

Purpose is looking for an ambitious Product Manager that can develop, launch and manage a wide range of ETFs and other investment products. This is a jack-of-all-trades role that allows you to develop a working knowledge of all aspects of the investment business and deal with many different internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, analytical and have plenty of initiative. We need someone with extensive knowledge of product development and well-honed project management skills to help identify and map exciting new frontiers and develop innovative new products, all while helping sales continue to generate positive momentum around existing funds.

Being a team player and seeing the big picture are critical to being successful here, as is a strong work ethic and plenty of initiative.

Responsibilities include:

  • Client facing information and document management – Maintain product info on company and third-party websites including returns, portfolio, and pricing information
  • Portfolio Management – Review how the investments have performed or may perform and whether any information needs to be disclosed to advisers or investors.
  • Communications – Can act as a bridge between the products and portfolio managers to the sales team, including commentaries, MRFPs, product ideas, etc.
  • Compliance – Work with compliance to ensure the documents aren’t misleading. Make sure that everything’s kosher and lodge documents with the regulator.
  • Strategy – Develop new features or new products, wind up of obsolete investment products, and provide feedback on any areas we can enhance our lineup.
  • Operations – Staff training on new products, communication of changes to products.
  • Research – Contribution to and review of upcoming research reports, white papers and other product-related communications.
  • Distribution – Gather feedback from financial advisers on what they like and don’t like about the products, and what new products they would like see.
  • Projects – Product launches, mergers, terminations and corporate actions.


The ideal candidate would have experience performing many or all of these functions in a mutual fund / ETF environment with a Canadian fund provider. A quant background is a significant asset.
