When filing their taxes, Canadian investors must calculate the adjusted cost base (ACB) on any investment funds they have sold throughout the year that are outside of tax sheltered accounts, such as RRSP, TFSA or RESP.
The ACB determines whether an investor should report a capital gain or capital loss on that year’s tax return. The Canada Revenue Agency requires investors to accurately report their capital gains or capital losses on Schedule 3 of their annual tax return. The ACB is calculated by adding the amount you paid to purchase your ETF or mutual fund investments, including any fees or commissions charged. You must also include any distributions that were reinvested into the fund. The total cost is then divided by the total number of units owned.
The Purpose Investments Adjusted Cost Base Calculator was designed to make it easy for you to determine your ACB and the corresponding capital gains or losses for any investments made in one or more Purpose funds.
